Flooring in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plants

Flooring plays a critical role in pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, where hygiene, safety, compliance and operational efficiency must all be maintained across a variety of environments. From GMP cleanrooms and laboratories to production halls and warehouse areas, each zone requires flooring with specific performance characteristics to support day-to-day operations and regulatory standards.

Chemical Resistance for Pharmaceutical Cleanrooms

For cleanroom environments, hygiene is vital. The flooring must be able to withstand strong chemical cleaners, some of which may contain highly corrosive chemicals. A high level of chemical resistance is therefore a must to avoid floor failure.

To comply with GMP standards, microbial control is also a priority in such areas, and so seamless resin floors with anti-microbial properties would be very beneficial.

Slip-Resistant Flooring for Production Areas

While hygiene and chemical resistance are essential in controlled environments, safety underfoot is equally important throughout pharmaceutical production facilities.

When wet, smooth, seamless surfaces can become hazardous to users, especially if no slip resistance is specified. Having a slightly textured profile can help to keep the space safe, even after cleaning. This could be specified for areas of the production zone or warehouse floor for example, on walkways, ramps or stairs, where the risk of slipping is greater.

Abrasion Resistance in Warehouse and Logistics Zones

In pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, warehouse and logistics zones are subjected to constant wheeled traffic from forklift trucks, AGVs and pallet movement durability also becomes a key consideration. For flooring that stands the test of time, manufacturing plants should also factor in some level of abrasion resistance for the floor.

Cracks or areas of wear in the floor can not only be a breeding ground for bacteria, but they can also have serious consequences on the ability of forklift trucks to move quickly and efficiently among narrow racking systems in the warehouse areas. Wear and tear can also present a trip hazard for pedestrians using the space.

Anti-Static Flooring for Laboratories and ATEX Areas

Static build-up can occur from a member of staff simply walking across the floor to their workstation, due to friction from movement in clothing and even from shoes interacting with the flooring. For laboratory environments, anti-static properties incorporated into the flooring system may be advantageous to avoid this static build-up, which in extreme circumstances could harm sensitive equipment found in pharmaceutical environments.

Anti-static properties are also important in ATEX rooms, which run the risk of explosion due to the presence of flammable gases, dusts, vapours or powders.

Colour-Coded Flooring for GMP Compliance

Whilst many of the functional aspects of the flooring described above cannot be seen by the naked eye, it doesn’t mean that aesthetics should take a back seat in pharmaceutical manufacturing plants. Colour can be used in the flooring to clearly differentiate between zones. This could help staff to identify safe walkways through the space, and areas that could pose a danger, such as where moving machinery is in operation. Colour, or coloured markings could also highlight ramps, steps, or ‘keep clear’ areas that can pose a risk to both pedestrians and wheeled machinery or vehicles.

Colour can also be used in cleanroom areas to differentiate between grades, such as A, B, C or D grade rooms. This can help staff to instantly know the protocols and environmental control required for each zone.

In addition to the above, key considerations for flooring also include reaction to fire as flooring materials should adhere to fire safety regulations and have the appropriate reaction to fire ratings, you should also consider low VOC (volatile organic compounds) materials to ensure air quality and safety, both during installation and use, once installed.

Selecting the right flooring system for a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant requires careful consideration of hygiene standards, operational demands and long-term durability. From cleanrooms and laboratories to warehouse and production areas, each environment benefits from a tailored specification approach.
